Changing Paradigm

Type - Competition
Location - Bhubhaneshwar, India
Site Area - 15,480 sq.ft
Organizer : MEC Industry Co. Ltd.

The Indian construction industry has long prioritized infrastructure through the lenses of cost efficiency and social impact. However, in doing so, the environmental consequences of material choices and construction practices have often been overlooked. Through this project, we aim to address that gap by exploring how a shift in materiality can significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the built environment. At its core, we propose the use of cross-laminated timber (CLT) as the primary construction material—offering a sustainable, renewable alternative to conventional systems while lowering embodied carbon.

Situated in Bhubaneswar, the site forms part of one of India’s first ten Smart City initiatives currently underway. The broader urban vision for the area includes the development of approximately 10,000 housing units, positioning the project within a larger framework of progressive and future-oriented growth. Located in the central region of the city and in close proximity to the main railway station, we recognize the site’s significant urban value, making it a prominent and highly accessible location for a residential development.

By combining sustainable material innovation with a strong understanding of urban context, we aspire to redefine contemporary residential architecture in India - demonstrating that environmental responsibility and urban expansion can evolve together in a meaningful way.
