The Bhalgat Residence is a four-storey multi-generational home tucked into a quiet colony of row houses in Pune. The family had a specific vision; they wanted something contemporary, but with classical undertones woven into it. To respond to that, we organised the house around a C-shaped plan, carving out a central courtyard that became the soul of the project.

The façade is composed of natural stone surfaces and layered volumes, materials and forms that feel grounded and calm, but carry a quiet strength. Along the south-facing street elevation, we introduced vertical fins to cut down on direct sunlight and bring in a layer of privacy without closing the house off. The chajja was drawn from the geometry of a classical cornice - a detail that ties the contemporary composition back to the classical reference the clients had asked for.

The interior planning was shaped by an insight the family shared early on: no matter how busy their schedules are, they always gather for at least one meal together each day. At the centre of the home, we placed a double-height family dining space that opens directly onto the courtyard. Every room in the house has a visual connection to this space, so even when the family is moving through their separate routines, there's a constant sense of being present with each other.

Large windows and generous outdoor areas pull natural light deep into the house throughout the day. At its core, this was a home designed to feel open and connected, not just architecturally, but in the way it quietly supports the rhythms of the people living in it.
